PET stands for Poly Ethylene Terephthalate, a plastic resin and a form of polyester. PET is a polymer that is formed by combining two monomers called modified ethylene glycol and Purified Terephthalic Acid.
PET is the type of plastic labeled with the #1 code on the
side or near the bottom of bottles and containers and is commonly
used to package soft drinks, water, juice, peanut butter, salad
dressings and oil, cosmetics and household cleaners.
PET is a popular package for food and non-food products because
it is inexpensive, lightweight, resalable, shatter-resistant
and recyclable.
Recycled Poly Ethylene Terephthalate (RPET) can be used to
make many new products, including fiber for polyester carpet;
fabric for T-shirts, long underwear, athletic shoes, luggage,
upholstery and sweaters; fiberfill for sleeping bags and winter
coats; industrial strapping, sheet and film; automotive parts,
such as luggage racks, headliners, fuse boxes, bumpers, grilles
and door panels; and new PET containers for both food and non-food
products.
PET is the material of choice for packing of consumer products.
The basic product is the preform (by injection of PET Pellets),
which users turn into bottles (by mold-blowing). Petco s.a.l.
produces both preform and bottles. PET packaging is popular
in food and non-food applications because it is inexpensive,
lightweight, shatter-resistant and recyclable.
Unique properties include
 |
Excellent clarity. |
 |
Less breakage, less waste and no spills. |
 |
Lightweight, offering lower logistic and
storage costs. |
 |
Enhanced product purity. |

PET material contains no toxic gases like chlorine and
others. Besides obvious health advantages, this makes PET
containers safe to incinerate: no toxic gases are generated.
PET strength is superior to PVC.
